As you are no doubt aware by now, HCL purchased the products formerly known as Lotus Notes and Domino from IBM on July 1 of this year. As you may also know, we’re pretty happy about the switch, mostly because HCL appears to be committed to a significant program of development for the platform, including annual major releases. Domino 10 was released in October 2018, and it looks like Domino 11 will ship before the end of this year.
HCL has really upped the ante in terms of transparency and communications with the community. But more importantly, they’ve laid out a cohesive strategy for the products, especially in terms of the part that we’re most interested in, which is how it relates to the development and maintenance of customized business applications.
In case you missed it, here are a few of the most interesting bits:
V10 introduced a Domino database connector for Node.JS, heralding a move toward JavaScript as the preferred language for building apps that need to access Domino data.
HCL Nomad is a new lightweight client that runs existing Notes apps (mostly) unchanged on mobile devices. Initially the iPad only was supported, but Nomad will run on Android and iPhone devices soon. And, there are plans to use Web Assembly technology to run Notes apps in any browser.
Most recently, HCL has announced that its rapid application development tool HCL Leap, will natively support Domino applications. Leap is the product formerly known as IBM Forms Experience Builder. This is a major step toward what HCL describes as a return to its roots, in an effort to get more non-developers building apps again, and really goes to the heart of what made Lotus Notes successful in the first place.
To us, that all adds up to a web-centric application build and deployment strategy that far outstrips anything we’ve seen on this platform before.
