Have You Updated Your Teamstudio Tools Lately?

By Nigel Cheshire

The suite of Teamstudio Developer tools has been around for a while. The oldest products still in the suite today are Analyzer and CIAO!. The first CIAO! licenses were sold on December 13, 1996 (yes, it was Friday the Thirteenth) to a company called Lotus Development Corporation. That’s almost 24 years ago. As you can imagine, there have been a few releases of those products since then. At some point (in the early noughties, I believe), we stopped releasing the eight products in the suite individually and started releasing them all together as “Edition xx”. That practice fit pretty well with our software distribution mechanism at the time, which was, of course, CD-ROM. So we were already grouping all the releases together and had been since day one. We are currently on Edition 33.

Anyhow, if you’re anything like me, you’ll keep using whatever version of a given software app happens to be installed on your laptop, until something stops working. You may be the same way with your Teamstudio tools. But of course if you do that, you potentially miss out on some great new features that get added in the mean time. And I’m here to tell you that there are some really good reasons to upgrade to the latest and greatest version of the Teamstudio tools.

So, step one: go take a look at the version number of your Teamstudio tool set. All the tools have an “About” button on them somewhere that will tell you which build number you have installed, but to find the point release number it’s best to look at the Teamstudio Reports database. You’ll find it at the bottom of the navigator.

If you’re on an older version than E32.0, then here’s the first major reason to upgrade: from 32.0 onwards we replaced the elderly and slightly fragile widget and MSI installers with a new installer based on Windows Installer technology. That made it easier to correctly detect the locations of Notes program and data files, not to mention the ability to easily uninstall the tools (as if you’d ever want to do that!).

Even if your current version of the tools is anything less than E33.0.3, then it’s time to upgrade. Fifteen minor fixes and enhancements have been added to the products since E33.0.0 shipped, more than half of which are in the latest release, which shipped on September 22, 2020. Including some important compatibility fixes for Domino v11. You can read all the details in the release notes.

If you are on an older version of Teamstudio and you are planning to upgrade your Notes client to v11, the best advice is to uninstall Teamstudio first, then do the Notes upgrade, followed by a reinstallation of the latest version of Teamstudio. You’ll also want to make sure you install Notes v11.0.1. Version 11.0.0 of the Notes API included a bug that can cause problems with some of the Teamstudio tools.

To download the latest version of the tools, visit the download page on our web site. If you have a current subscription for the tools, you won’t need an updated license key, just upgrade and go. You will want to refresh the design of any copies of the supporting databases though, such as the Teamstudio Reports database mentioned above.
